As pillars of Canada’s electronic music scene, Matt and Mark Thibideau have played at some of the most internationally recognized clubs and festivals in the world, performing in major Canadian cities and across Europe’s music hubs, from Bucharest to Berlin. They began making music in the late eighties, out of a basement in small town Wallaceburg —not far from the American border near Detroit, using a ragtag collection of synthesizers either pawned or found in the buy-and-sell paper. The fraternal twins eventually moved to London, Ontario—where they took over the local rave scene by storm, before establishing a base in Toronto in 1996.
Since then, Matt and Mark have worked on a combination of solo records and duo projects—signing with international labels, including Joule Imprint, Cynosure, Vade Mecum, and Berg Audio to name a few.

The pair’s passion for synthesizers led to the 2011 launch of their own label, Obsolete Components. Its music focuses on organic collaborations with other artists, while putting defunct equipment into the spotlight.
While Matt and Mark have long established themselves as brand names in the Toronto electronic scene, their music first made its leap overseas in 2001—with the label Substatic. The Thibideau brothers have performed, together and separate, for clubs in Lisbon, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Amsterdam, Budapest, Montreal, Rennes, Toronto and New York.
In 2022, Matt and Mark performed at the Sunwaves Festival in Romania, playing alongside artists like DJs Raresh and Ricardo Villalobos. They continue to play at gigs, festivals, and clubs worldwide —further advancing the evolution of their music. While Matt and Mark steadily inhabit the realm of dub techno, their releases incorporate diverse influences—whether it’s elements of house and techno inspired by their proximity to Detroit’s music scene—or pushing the limits of conventionality using their wide range of analog synthesizers and drum machines.
